Private Remote Cemetery
December 2007
| This investigation was
done at a private cemetery in a remote area within a heavily
wooded location
in Venango County, Pennsylvania. Urban legend has established this
site as the burial ground of a coven of witches, and often refers to it
as Witches Cemetery. Our team's historical research disputes this
claim and reveals that this is actually an early Baptist pioneer
cemetery. From the book "Cooperstown, Pa, Through The Years.." by Rich, Booth and Hillier Mill at Cooperstown 1997,
page 4 states: "Baptists were also represented among the early settlers. Although there was no Baptist Church within the village of Cooperstown, an active Society met first at the home of Jacob Jennings at Bradleytown and later, in 1835, organized the Freewill Baptist Church at Plum Corners. The Small, Gordon, McAlevy, Williams, McIntosh, Carter, and Smith families were among the early members, many of whom are buried in the little cemetery near the site of the long-gone church." The earliest burial in this cemetery is for Samuel Small who died 5 May 1839. Mr. Small and his family were some of the earliest members of the Freewill Baptist Church at Plum Corners, that no longer exists.
